ON THE BACK BURNER

We have been in this  condo for almost 20 years. That in itself is hard to belief. I don't want to jinx it, but we have had very little problems with major appliances. The washing machine and dryer we bought as soon as we moved here... from Salvation Army. I think they were a total of $50.00. They aren't pretty,  but  they get the job done. I have had minor repairs twice to the washing machine. It has a huge drum and holds a lot of wash. The man who has repaired them has told us that they just don't make machines like this any more and I believe that. This week, I had a problem with the thermostat on the Heat/ AC unit. It didn't turn on the furnace or AC. First  time ever .The repair man wanted to see our AC unit.I showed him what I have always thought was our AC machine. It was the compressor.  How was I to know that. I couldn't figure out what I was to look for. I was thinking a AC unit must look like a window AC and we didn't have that. Duh.. it was that thing in the closet with the hot water heater. I actually never  pay attention to it, except to change the filter every month.I don 't even know what I thought it was. That was a little embarrassing. I thought I had  a better understanding of what went on here. But the repair man was professional, he didn't shake his head and roll his eyes at my dumbness. He fixed the thermostat ,gave the AC a look over, replaced a battery looking thing , showed me what he did, charged me an unbelievable low figure and went on his way.  I still feel a little silly about not knowing what was in the closet with the hot water heater, but now I do know ,so that is a good thing.
